According to the report, 6 Cameroonian journalists were imprisoned in 2021 in the exercise of their profession. Cameroon is ranked14th country that imprisons the most journalists in the world. CPJ considers that the number of journalists imprisoned "is a reflection of the growing intolerance around the world for independent journalism" in a context of "political upheaval and media repression."
The number of journalists imprisoned in 2021 stands at 293. China remains the country that imprisons the most journalists in the world, with CPJ's 2021 census showing 50 journalists behind bars as the country prepares to host the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022. As for the African continent, the escalation of the civil war in Ethiopia has led to new media restrictions, making it the second most imprisoned journalists in sub-Saharan Africa (9), after Eritrea (16).
The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, non-profit organization that promotes press freedom around the world. It defends the right of journalists to report information safely and without fear of reprisals. According to CPJ, every year, a hundred journalists are arrested, imprisoned or killed. In Cameroon, the cases of journalists such as Samuel Wazizi (who died in custody) and Kingsley Njoka testify to the repression that media men suffer in the course of their work.
