According to the Defense Ministry, they were apprehended after a violent fight between security forces and separatists on December 8.

Four separatist fighters were neutralized by security maintenance forces. In a statement made public yesterday, December 10, the Ministry of Defense informs that a convoy of the BIR fell into an ambush on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at a place called Nitop in the bamenda II district. Using an improvised explosive device (IED), the separatists immobilized the army convoy before opening fire on the soldiers. After heavy fighting between the two sides, the death toll shows a damaged army vehicle and four terrorists under control.

The army also claims to have seized several components used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices. Captain (Navy) Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo also denied rumours of destruction of civilian homes in Nitop. "During the exchange of fire, the said room stuffed with explosives, will ignite, causing a shock wave on some neighboring houses," explains the head of the division of the Ministry of Defense.
