Last October, a group of people appeared at the school in the southwestern city of Kumba and shot at sight classrooms full of young students. Since the region was bathed in an insurgency of the separatists, even though the main secession movement had declared not to be involved, they were strongly pointed out.

Twelve people were on trial for these hate crimes. Five of them were eventually sentenced to death by shooting.

While the death penalty has been reintroduced into Cameroon's criminal code, the sentences of convicts are regularly commuted to life imprisonment. But given the cruelty of the act, the law requires a shooting within seven days of sentencing.
