After nearly 13 months of detention, at least 50 MRC activists detained in Kondengui prison in Yaoundé will be able to meet their president, Maurice Kamto.
This is a victory for this party. The president of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) has finally obtained permission to visit his party's activists, detained in the Kondengui central prison in Yaoundé.
In a letter dated December 15, the administrative authorities authorized the leader of the Cameroonian opposition to communicate with about fifty political detainees, members of his chapel. A decision that comes after the sentencing of some MRC activists to three years in prison with fines. The Douala Military Court invoked charges of unauthorized demonstration, insurrection, revolt, gathering and hostility against the homeland. The unfortunate had been arrested during the white marches organized by the party on September 22, 2020.
"Political trials"
However, according to the MRC, these "peaceful" marches were intended to demand:
- cease fire and inclusive dialogue with the aim of ending the war in NOSO;
- the adoption of a consensual Electoral Code; the transmission of power through democratic mechanisms and not by mutual agreement;
- and an audit of the government's spending on infrastructure construction for the next NAC.
"The political nature of these demands being indisputable, it goes without saying that the trials opened before the Military Court of Douala became ipso facto political trials, the strategy of the regime then consisting in instrumentalizing for political purposes, the courts of Common Law, but especially the Military Courts whose martial character of the procedure and convictions is known", had communicated the party of Maurice Kamto.
