The Bonanjo Court of First Instance in Douala set its verdict yesterday 7 December with sentences of up to five years in prison.
The Court of First Instance of Bonanjo in Douala sentenced yesterday, December 7, 2021, about twenty supporters of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) to sentences of up to 5 years in prison as part of the marches of September 22, 2020, according to information published by Martin Tajo. Most were prosecuted for acts of insurrection, revolution, gathering, meeting and public demonstrations.
As a reminder, the opponent Maurice Kamto, leader of the CRM, had organized on September 22, 2020, a peaceful demonstration to demand the departure of President Paul Biya and the postponement of the regional elections scheduled for last December, if the crisis in the Anglophone regions was not resolved and if the electoral system was not reformed in a consensual way. This demonstration had been banned by the government and repressed by the police.
According to the assessment made by the MRC and civil society organizations the day after the demonstration, 155 people, mostly activists of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon, had been imprisoned in the prisons of Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam, Nkongsamba and Mfou. On November 17, of the 33 MRC activists prosecuted by the Bafoussam military court in the west of the country, 27 were acquitted.
