According to the minister in charge of industry, this new company will reduce imports of textile products.

The Cameroonian government plans to create a second cotton spinning unit in 2022 outside the Cameroon Industrial Cotton Mill (Cicam). This new company, as announced by the Minister of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, Gabriel Dodo Ndoke, in Parliament will diversify domestic production, we learn from the site Invest in Cameroon.

According to the Minmidt, the establishment of this new spinning unit will significantly increase the processing rate of cotton and drastically reduce imports of textile products. With an estimated production capacity of 300,000 tons per year, this company will diversify domestic production in order to meet the needs of the State in terms of clothing. The new company will thus have as its field of action the making of the outfits of the major technical bodies of the State (law enforcement agencies, schoolchildren, universities, etc.). Public procurement could thus serve as a lever for the development of this sector, we learn from the same site.

Cicam holds the monopoly of production in the country with only 5 of the local market shares which is flooded by fabrics from China (82 and West Africa (13). However, cotton produced locally by the Cotton Development Company (Sodecoton) is considered to be of good quality on the international market.
