On 26 June 2025, the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) held a ceremony at the party headquarters in the Odza district of Yaoundé. Under the leadership of Second Vice-President Tiriane Noah, the MRC officially introduced the elected officials who had joined the party. This was clearly an initiative aimed at strengthening its political legitimacy and clarifying its representativeness ahead of the 2025 elections. This presentation, announced in a press release the day before, marks a strategic turning point for the party led by Maurice Kamto.
An announcement to counter speculation
During the ceremony, the MRC revealed the identities of eight municipal councillors and two deputy MPs. All are committed party activists. This initiative has a clear objective: to put an end to speculation about the MRC’s ability to field elected officials. We know that this is an essential condition for participating in the presidential election according to electoral law.
Maurice Kamto in Paris: a historic mobilisation for 2025
In the absence of elected representatives, the law requires a party to collect 300 signatures, including 30 per region, in order to present a candidate for the presidential election. This is a very complex task given the dominance of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC).
This presentation of elected representatives comes after the MRC boycotted the 2020 legislative and municipal elections and lost its only seat in the National Assembly, which it had won in 2013. This boycott weakened the party’s institutional presence. It was reportedly motivated by allegations of electoral fraud and a rejection of the results of the 2018 presidential election. By unveiling these newly elected officials, the MRC is seeking to demonstrate that it now has a tangible electoral base, which is essential to legitimise Maurice Kamto’s candidacy in the 2025 presidential election.
