Figures evaluated between January and October 2021, announced the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (Minepia) Dr. Taiga, in front of the elected representatives of the nation.
Between 1 January and 31 October 2021, the Ministry of Livestock; of fisheries and animal industries issued 34 technical import notices for fishery products for an overall quota of 249,857 tonnes. According to Minister Taiga, in the first half of 2021, these imports were around 97,000 tons. In four months, the pace of imports has increased, and the country has imported an additional 152,654 tons as of October 31, 2021.
In terms of local aquaculture production, the country recorded 93,000 tonnes of fish products in the first ten months of the year. According to data made public by Minepia, these include 11,000 tonnes of fish from aquaculture, 65,000 tonnes of fish from artisanal sea fishing, 10,000 tonnes of fish from inland fisheries and 5,000 tonnes of fish from industrial fishing.
According to Minepia, the country imports on average about 100 billion CFA francs of frozen fish each year. The demand for fish is around 500,000 tons according to the government. To contribute to the reduction of the deficit in fish products, the Cameroonian Mavecam has informed the State of its intention to invest 12 billion CFA francs by producing per year, 3 million tons of tilapia, 2 million tons of catfish and 50 tons of shrimp.
